Mask Up on the Metro Rail: DMTCL's Urgent Request to Prevent COVID-19

With a recent uptick in COVID-19 infections across the country, renewed emphasis is being placed on precautionary measures to protect public health. As part of this effort, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) has issued a special request to its esteemed Metro Rail passengers: please wear a mask when traveling on the Metro Rail.

This urgent message was published in a notice signed by Md. Zahidul Islam, Deputy General Manager (Admin) of DMTCL, on Tuesday, June 9. The notice clearly states: “Honorable passengers traveling on the Metro Rail are especially requested to wear masks to prevent the spread of coronavirus infection.”

Why This Precaution Is Essential
#

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness that can spread rapidly through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. In enclosed and crowded environments like the Metro Rail, where thousands of people commute daily, the risk of transmission is naturally higher. Wearing a mask not only protects you but also helps protect your fellow passengers, especially those with weakened immune systems or the elderly.

This initiative by DMTCL is a crucial reflection of their social responsibility and commitment to public health. While the strict restrictions of the initial pandemic phase are no longer in place, the virus has not been completely eradicated, and new variants continue to be a concern. Therefore, by adhering to a few simple precautions, we can collectively ensure a safer public transport system.

What’s Your Role?

In addition to wearing masks, passengers are also encouraged to follow some general hygiene practices:

  • Sanitize Your Hands: Use hand sanitizer when entering and exiting the Metro Rail.
  • Maintain Physical Distance (Where Possible): While challenging during peak hours, try to maintain some distance from fellow passengers if feasible.
  • Practice Cough and Sneeze Etiquette: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing, and dispose of used tissues properly.
  • Avoid Travel If Unwell: If you have flu-like or COVID symptoms, avoid public gatherings to protect others.

By taking these small steps together, we can make Metro Rail travel safer for everyone. Please adhere to DMTCL’s timely request and step up to protect yourself and others. Your awareness can play the biggest role in preventing infection.
