Universal Tickets Coming to Metro Rail: Pay Fares with Debit-Credit Cards!

Great news for Dhaka Metro Rail commuters! To simplify ticket purchasing and modernize payment methods, the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) is preparing to launch a groundbreaking ‘Universal Ticketing System’ (UTS). This new system promises to make your Metro Rail journey even easier and more technologically advanced.

UTS: A Step Towards Ticketless Travel!

With this innovative system, passengers will be able to pay their fares directly by tapping their bank debit or credit cards. This will eliminate the hassle of waiting in long lines at ticket counters. What’s more, single journey tickets can also be purchased via mobile banking, a fantastic convenience for digitally-savvy commuters.

When Can We Expect This New System?

According to news media reports, the installation of necessary equipment, software setup, and all related activities for launching UTS are expected to take approximately six months. During this period, passengers can continue to use their existing Rapid Pass, MRT Pass, and single journey cards.

How is the Project Progressing?

To implement this state-of-the-art system, the Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) invited tenders on April 28. Around 30 local and international companies expressed interest. Technical and financial proposals are currently being requested from them.

Interestingly, DMTCL is not making any direct financial investment in this project. Instead, the selected contractor will bear the cost of installing equipment and software and will be responsible for transaction management. A percentage of the revenue from ticket sales will then be paid to that company, as per the agreement.

Current Challenges and Future Solutions

Meanwhile, DMTCL has stopped supplying MRT Passes. Instead, the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) is now issuing Rapid Passes. However, the DTCA is struggling to meet the demand for cards, creating a shortage for passengers. Additionally, many single journey ticket cards are becoming defective mid-journey, further increasing commuter woes.

DMTCL is optimistic that the introduction of the Universal Ticketing System will significantly reduce these ticket-related inconveniences for passengers. It will make the fare payment process more secure and technology-dependent, ultimately enhancing the overall Metro Rail travel experience.
